Heterogeneous Databases An aggregate navigator may do more than simply rewrite SQL. It may also direct it to a different physical database, a database from a different vendor, or even translate SQL into another language. These possibilities greatly expand the potential flexibility of a solution, allowing specialized tools to respond to queries, regardless of location, time, or access technology. Some of these capabilities, like the ability to redirect to a different physical database, have been possible for over a decade. Others, such as the ability to redirect an SQL query to a multidimensional cube, have started to emerge relatively recently. Separation of the data storage technology from the data access language is an exciting development, which should lead to a new dynamic breed of data warehouse that can be configured in real time to respond to users regardless of their request, location, or access language. Heterogeneous Front Ends Last, it is also possible for an aggregate navigation function to provide benefit to a variety of different front-end tools. An ideal aggregate navigator rewrites any query, whether submitted by a business intelligence tool, a reporting tool, or a command-line SQL utility. Aggregate navigators built into front-end tools typically cannot provide their services to other front-end tools, and may miss out on this possibility. This does not mean you should not make use of such a capability, but it does limit its benefit. Inefficiencies may also be observed if there is more than one front-end tool and each requires configuration of its own aggregate navigator. This is as much a consequence of having multiple front-end tools as it is of their design.

This quick tour of SQL showed you what SQL can do and illustrated the style of the SQL language, using eight of the most commonly used SQL statements. To summarize: SQL is used to retrieve data from the database, using the SELECT statement. You can retrieve all or part of the stored data, sort it, and ask SQL to summarize the data, using totals and averages. SQL is used to update the database, by adding new data with the INSERT statement, deleting data with the DELETE statement, and modifying existing data with the UPDATE statement. SQL is used to control access to the database, by granting and revoking specific privileges for specific users with the GRANT and REVOKE statements. SQL is used to create the database by defining the structure of new tables and dropping tables when they are no longer needed, using the CREATE and DROP statements.

SQL Load Simulator One of the main challenges with testing backup and other database solutions is the lack of available client connections On one hand, you want to simulate a lot of clients On the other, you can t afford to run tests on production databases If you want to measure the performance of your SQL Server installation, you can use SQL Load Simulator to simulate multiple concurrent connections to the machine from one or more clients This is particularly useful if you want to measure the effects of performing a backup while queries are being run against a database Load Simulator accepts one or more SQL query files and prompts you for the number of connections to simulate It then opens that number of simultaneous connections to the server you specify and runs the scripts repeatedly (see Figure 6-2)..

The other half of the invisibility equation deals with the automatic generation and maintenance of aggregates. For some tools, aggregate navigation and generation capabilities are closely bound together, while others separate them or only offer one or the other.

The salesperson who took the order For each of these relationships, different rules seem appropriate: The relationship between an order and the product that is ordered should probably use the RESTRICT rule for delete and update. It shouldn't be possible to delete product information from the database if there are still current orders for that product, or to change the product number. The relationship between an order and the customer who placed it should probably use the CASCADE rule for delete and update. You probably will delete a customer row from the database only if the customer is inactive or ends their relationship with the company. In this case, when you delete the customer, any current orders for that customer should also be deleted. Similarly, changes in a customer number should automatically propagate to orders for that customer. The relationship between an order and the salesperson who took it should probably use the SET NULL rule. If the salesperson leaves the company, any orders taken by that salesperson become the responsibility of an "unknown salesperson" until they are reassigned. Alternatively, the SET DEFAULT rule could be used to automatically assign these orders to the sales vice president. This relationship should probably use the CASCADE update rule, so that employee number changes automatically propagate to the ORDERS table.
